About Us

Visit the Philadelphia Insectarium and Butterfly Pavilion ...

An incredible adventure for the whole family!

About Us

The Insectarium is dedicated to serving the people of the greater Philadelphia area through entomological education and good ol’ fashion fun. Our highly trained staff will be sure to give you and your family something to laugh and talk about for years to come. Join us for an afternoon or spend the whole weekend and learn why Philadelphia loves insects.

Over 65* species of exotic and domestic critters live at the Insectarium’s zoo.  We showcase a diversity of insects, spiders, scorpions, millipedes, centipedes, insectivorous reptiles, and much more!  But at the Insectarium you don’t just get to see these creatures through a glass tank wall…you get to play with many of them! Our highly trained staff wake up every day excited and ready to teach kids (of all ages!) how to properly hold some of the most amazing arthropods in the world.

Enjoy two full floors of exciting and educational exhibits. Come learn about the most successful group of animals in the world…insects! Our displays have something to teach and engage individuals of all educational backgrounds. And for those who are too young to read, we are excited to share our interactive touch screen games, beautiful artwork, and up-close critter encounters!

The Insectarium proudly offers a wide variety of lectures, interactive workshops, and events of all types throughout the year. From birthday parties to class trips to day camps to yoga to community lectures on zika, the Insectarium does it all! We believe it is important to not only hear information, but to also see and feel what you’re talking about! We don’t just talk about the importance of pollinators…we go outside and actually SEE them in action!

For Teachers

Follow up resources, assessments, lists of standards addressed by grade level (both next generation and common core), and general curriculum can all be found here.  We are continuously adding new teaching materials for instructors to use.  The Insectariums is fun…but it’s also very educational!  Looking for something that we don’t have? Ask us for it and we’ll happily make it!

Operation Monarch

As part of our commitment to helping the ecosystem in which we live, the Insectarium runs a nonprofit called Operation Monarch. We believe it is important to give back to the people and communities who support us and to do this we host numerous free programs in an around the museum. Our mission is to work towards saving the monarch by planting milkweed, spreading awareness of the threats to this important species, conducting OE parasite counts, and providing free education to the community about how they can help. #butterfliesarecoming ...
